Racing in South Philly, errr, Talladega

Really, we’d expect this sort of thing in Philadelphia.
Jeff Gordon’s on-track burnout didn’t garner a whole lot of airtime. Perhaps then he would have proven his driving acumen by avoiding all the debris that some numbskulls threw on the track.
There’s no excuse for that sort of thing. None. Try and tell me one, and I’ll be happy to tell you why you’re full of it. If you sat at home and thought for one second you’d do the same, you’re no better than the clowns who actually did.
Guilty or not, NASCAR needs a clean-up; a different kind of draft

Tony Stewart had a meeting with NASCAR officials this morning. Oh, to be invisible in that room…
Stewart’s comments on his radio show — combined with him skipping out on a press conference at Phoenix — have landed him in a serious storm with NASCAR. The sanctioning body may have used the missed press conference as an excuse to meet with Stewart, but we all know that’s not the real reason for the meeting.
There’s all kinds of stories you hear if you read enough. Teams cheat and sometimes they get caught; whether officials turn a blind eye in certain situations has its own section in the myth book. Curious cautions have their own section, too. All of it’s circumstantial, of course, but it’s hard to overlook such a mountain of evidence — concrete or no.

With the larger issues figured out, the staff at Richmond International Raceway is down to the details.
Lots and lots of details.
The track will open up the centerpiece to its new Commonwealth Grandstand, a club called Torque, tonight. Media and local business people will get the first chance to check out the club.
Until it’s resolved, Earnhardt’s contract will dominate news (UPDATED)

Dale Earnhardt Jr is scheduled to be today’s guest on NASCAR’s weekly media teleconference. There will be questions about his season, certainly—the two top-10s, the 15th-place standing—but there will likely more questions on his contract situation.
Contract negotiations are usually the most mundane thing you’ll ever read in the sports section. But it’s a critical part of the reportage; even negotiations with generally anonymous Redskins at least merit a line or two.

What’s going to happen if Tony Stewart passes Earnhardt on the wins list? Will he get the same treatment?
No matter what, NASCAR is at a crossroads. There’s the court battle with AT&T (arguments were heard this week) and its most talented driver calling the credibility of the sport into question.
Director of public relations Keith Green said there was the matter of simply making sure everything — everything — was in order before the club officially welcomed outsiders.
They’re also expecting delivery of the race trophies sometime this week or, more likely, early next week. Cup trophies are often very distinct, and might not look anything like your standard trophy. Texas’ trophy looked like a pair of boots, while Phoenix gave away a Fender Stratocaster, which Jeff Gordon tried to play in victory lane. (At the right of the photo, there appears to be a more standard-looking trophy, too.)
