Will NASCAR Chase Junior? (UPDATED)

Aug 31, 2007

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has two races to gain 159 points on Kurt Busch.

He’s a longshot to make the Chase — sorry, Junior fans. But let’s put it into perspective: If Junior wins and leads the most laps at California while Busch finishes dead last, Junior would be ahead by two points.

Junior’s not a good bet to win: Though Earnhardt (pictured at right, taking a break at Indy) was second at California in last year’s fall race, he’s finished 32nd or worse in four of the past six races there. Busch, meanwhile, started on the pole in both of last year’s races; in five of the past six at Fontana, he’s finished 16th or better.

A fat ‘F’ for ABC’s NASCAR documentary

How amusing. Knowing I’d be busy with office work today, I wrote the following passage on Tuesday as an add-on to the main blog, in case there was any sort of breaking news:

*****
• PERHAPS YOU’VE HEARD ABOUT MICHAEL VICK and his imminent jail time and indefinite suspension from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

In an effort to stop thinking about the non-stop coverage, we got to thinking (never a good thing). And since it’s that time of year without a lot of news happening, we fall back on what we always do: lists.

So, here it is, the top five things banned by NASCAR:

The problems that lie ahead for Zucker, Calfiornia Speedway
Brian Hunsicker
Aug 28, 2007

For the first time in my life, I heard the term “NASCAR Nap” a few days ago.

You know: It’s a lazy Sunday afternoon, the race is on but still a long way from ending. So there’s this great battle for the lead on lap 94 and…

Wait, it’s lap 184? How’d that happen? I just shut my eyes for a split second…

The phenomenon’s easy enough to understand. Haven’t we all partaken in it?

A soggy night in Landover, a boring night in Bristol (apparently)

Aug 27, 2007

I do my very best to be honest on here, whether it’s calling it as I see it or just being up front with you.

So I won’t lie: I did not see a second of the Bristol race. Have yet to even see a highlight. The former was expected; the latter was not. Why? I was covering the Fiasco at FedEx.

In case you missed it, Saturday night’s Ravens-Redskins preseason NFL game was delayed, then concluded early because of continued severe weather. And it wasn’t just an empty threat; I used my cell phone to record a few minutes for posterity (notice the trees swaying in the background and the frequent lightning). (OK, apparently YouTube is being difficult at the moment. I’ll try to remember to get a link for you in the next few days.)

Taking aim at the sniping between NASCAR and AT&T
Brian Hunsicker
Aug 24, 2007

Is this the last we see of AT&T’s blue-and-white globe for a while?

Early reports out of Bristol indicate that Jeff Burton’s car has no decals on it. The Associated Press and our cousins at the Media General newspapers haven’t yet posted a photo of the new look for the No. 31 (the pic at right is from last week at Michigan), but Scene Daily does have an image with its story.

Just orange and nothing else.
