Hinton nails the Petty-Hamlin blow-up
Brian Hunsicker
Sep 28, 2007
A well-done reality slap delivered to Denny Hamlin from Orlando Sentinel writer Ed Hinton.
Hinton examines last week’s run-in between Hamlin and Kyle Petty at Dover.
The thing that made it, for me, was reminding me that Hamlin is a few months younger than Adam Petty would have been.
Ho-hum, another night racing coming in ‘08

With yesterday’s release of the 2008 Cup schedule, the two expected major changes were confirmed.
There will be no off-week after the Daytona 500, which many believed blunted any momentum that the sport’s biggest race may have created. Instead, five weekends will pass by before the first weekend off.
Secondly, the race at Chicagoland will be moved to Saturday night. The track is installing lights and will go prime time next season.
Excited?
I didn’t think so.
Jason Keller and Crash Davis

Scene Daily reminds us that Jason Keller might reach history this weekend. If he qualifies for Saturday’s Busch race at Kansas — he’s outside of the top 30 in points, so that’s no guarantee — he’ll tie Tommy Houston’s career record of 417 Busch Series starts.
Wow, is Bull Durham really almost 20 years old?
Yeah, I know that seems like an abrupt transition. But those of you who’ve seen the movie remember Kevin Costner’s character, Crash Davis. (That’s Costner pictured at right from 2006.)
Edwards fined; Force on the mend; Yeats improves

Two for the day, since we were negligent yesterday:
NASCAR has announced that Carl Edwards has been docked 25 points as the result of a car that failed inspection after Edwards’ win at Dover on Sunday. The penalty knocks him from third to sixth in the Chase standings.
Car owner Jack Roush was penalized 25 owner points; crew chief Bob Osbourne was fined $25,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
The problem was that Edwards’ rear end was too low. In interviews after the race on ESPN — and in a statement released by Roush Fenway president Geoff Smith today — both were critical of the ruling.
Petty shows a bit of emotion

I spent all of Monday watching some high school golf out in Warrenton — actually, pretty far outside of Warrenton — so I wasn’t able to get something posted. Excuses, I know, but please do accept my humble apology.
The racing weekend kind of came full circle for me. Every time the tour heads to Dover, I’m reminded of a quote I heard (maybe read?) from Kyle Petty once.
He recalled that back when the races there were 500 miles, life was actually a lot easier. Drivers could ride around in the back of the pack, avoiding any potential wrecks, and make a move to the front in the latter stages of the race.
But at 400 miles, there’s no luxury of waiting around for the end. That, and the physical toll a track like Dover takes, made it one of the toughest places to run at.

I was spending a weekend at an old girlfriend’s house in north central Pennsylvania. We were watching ESPN — college football, I would assume, since it’s Saturday — with the crawl on the bottom.
The night race at Daytona is a staple of the week of Independence Day. The Coca-Cola 600 is the longest race of the year; though it starts in the late afternoon, most of the race is conducted at night. Lowe’s fall race is at night too, right in the thick of the Chase.
The veteran Davis is enlisted to tutor a brash rising pitcher, Nuke LaLoosh, who has the arm but not the brain. The interplay between Davis, LaLoosh and Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) make it one of the
“I say misfortune because we are being penalized for a violation that actually impaired the car’s performance,” he added, echoing Edwards on Sunday.
Bernstein walked away, while Force — pictured at right with Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Daytona in February — was flown to the hospital, though his injuries turned out to be not life-threatening.
Petty, as you may have heard, made some newer news over the weekend. He got punted by Denny Hamlin and didn’t take too kindly to it, confronting Hamlin in the garage.
