Smith ups the ante in spat with Concord

The spat between Bruton Smith and the City of Concord just took an unusual turn: Smith told the Charlotte Observer that the chances of him relocating Lowe’s Motor Speedway are around 90 percent.

Smith is upset with the city after he started building a drag strip on speedway property. The city didn’t think this was right, and re-zoned the area to prohibit drag strips.

So Smith pulled a page from other sports’ playbooks and threatened to move.

Does a lack of competitiveness affect the Chase format, or just this one?

Maybe now isn’t the best time to assess the Chase. Or maybe it’s the perfect time.

After Jeff Gordon’s win on Saturday night at Lowe’s, he’s got a 68-point lead on teammate Jimmie Johnson. Clint Bowyer is 78 back, and Tony Stewart trails by a shade under 200.

This is a three-man race at best. And realistically, it comes down to Gordon and Johnson.

Childress teams struggle; don’t forget your vaccination

What’s going on with the Childress teams?

After qualifying last night at Lowe’s, it was easy to pick out the Chase drivers. Most of them were at the top, with six in the top 15.

All three Childress teams, all of whom are in the Chase, were buried. Kevin Harvick (pictured at right) was the best at 24th, Clint Bowyer was next at 25th and Jeff Burton was back in 27th.

Boring forecast for Lowe’s?

Oct 11, 2007

My wife grew up in central Oregon, decidedly not NASCAR country. In 2004, she finally took the plunge and we ventured off to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600.

She was pretty wide-eyed through the whole experience: the flyover (well, even I was, since it was a B-2 stealth bomber), the parade laps (when you’ve never seen a race in person, even those sound loud and look fast; I told her to just wait); and that first lap.

We sat three rows off the track just past the finish line, right by that little kink in the track just before Turn 1.

For as long as I live, I’ll never forget the look on her face as the green flag flew, the engines roared and 43 cars rolled through the first half of the first of 600 miles.

Coors-Miller merger shouldn’t affect racing much
Brian Hunsicker
Oct 10, 2007

The announcement yesterday that Miller and Coors were joining forces with a merger obviously has big implications throughout NASCAR.

The two companies currently have two sponsorships, but Jayski notes that Coors – through its Coors Light brand – won’t be adorning a Chip Ganassi Dodge next year but notes it was recently named the official beer of NASCAR. Miller has a long-running sponsorship through Penske Racing with Kurt Busch’s Miller Lite Dodge.

The combined strengths of Coors and Miller will be formidable, certainly, but won’t approach the market share of Budweiser, which boasts just under 50 percent of the market.
